What to prepare as an international student before you arrive in Australia

Play icon

Before you board your flight to Australia, there are a few essential things to organise to start your journey as an international student on the right foot. At UNSW College, we’ve outlined key steps to take before leaving home and what to arrange once you arrive.

With over 50 years of experience helping international students adjust to university life, we understand that this adventure can be both exciting and a bit overwhelming. If you need any help with planning or have questions, just reach out—we’re here for you.

Accept your offer to study with us

Once you’ve received an offer to study with us, make sure you officially accept it. After you have paid the relevant fees we will issue you with your Confirmation of Enrolment, also called a CoE. Keep a digital copy of your CoE handy as it is an important document which you will need for other processes.

Ensure your passport is current

You will need a current passport which is valid for a minimum of six months to travel to Australia as an international student. Now is the time to renew your passport if required. It’s a good idea to take a colour photocopy of your passport and leave it at home with your family, or a scanned digital version that you can email to them and yourself for reference.

Arrange your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

It is a requirement for you to hold current overseas student health cover (OSHC) to apply for a student visa. As part of this process, you might need to have health examinations. Find out about which examinations you need and how to arrange them.

Not all health insurers offer OSHC. We recommend that you look at the different plans and prices from the companies currently providing overseas student health cover to decide which option best suits your needs.

At UNSW College, our preferred provider of OSHC for international students is Medibank Private.

Basic OSCH plans will generally include visits to the doctor (GP), some hospital treatments, ambulance, and some prescribed medicines.

At UNSW College and UNSW Sydney, we offer health services on campus including medical clinic, optometrist, dentist, doctor, physiotherapist and UNSW Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS).

If there are other services you want covered, it could be worth considering adding extras with your basic OSHC. Another option to consider is purchasing travel insurance or private health insurance in addition to your OSHC so you can cover treatments not included in your cover.

Apply for your student visa

We recommend that you complete and submit your student visa application as soon as possible after receiving your CoE as processing times can vary.

You will need to apply for your student visa at least eight weeks before your course begins if you are applying from outside Australia. If you are applying from within the country, make sure you allow plenty of time to apply for your student visa so your current substantive visa doesn’t expire first.

All international students require the following to apply for their student visa:

  • Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
  • Overseas student health cover (OSHC)
  • Current passport valid for minimum six months.

You can apply and find further information through the Australian Department of Home Affairs website.

As with your passport, we recommend that you take a copy of your student visa to keep with you while travelling (and a digital copy for safe keeping).

Take the time to understand your visa conditions

It’s important to understand that you need to meet all requirements and processes to successfully secure your student visa. You also need to be clear about all the conditions of your student visa. The Visa Entitlement Verification Online system (VEVO) is a helpful resource for you to learn about all of the conditions.

Book your flight

Please wait until you have your student visa processed and granted before booking your flight to Australia. Consider when your study starts and give yourself time to settle in and perhaps even do some sight-seeing before launching into your learning. If you’re going to find accommodation after arriving, give yourself at least two weeks to arrange this before classes start.

Some great tips on how to prepare for your flight to Australia are available on the Study Australia website.

Plan your accommodation

You will need to have accommodation for your first night (or more) arranged before you travel to Australia. This is because you need to provide an Australian address on your incoming passenger card when you arrive, which you show at immigration.

If you wish to secure on-campus accommodation, apply as soon as you can as these rooms are generally the most popular for international students and book out quickly.

For those seeking off-campus options, you might want to book a hotel or Airbnb for your first few nights, or longer, to give you time to secure your new place.

Once you have your accommodation sorted, be sure to inform us of your new address as it’s a condition of your student visa for your education provider to have these details.

Open an Australian bank account

In most instances, you will need the following information to open an Australian bank account:

  • Passport
  • Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
  • Proof or your Australian address (lease agreement, utility bill with address and name listed, or a letter from student services with on-campus accommodation details).

Ask your existing bank if you can take out cash using your account and card in Australia and if there are charges for you to withdraw cash from ATMs (cash withdrawal machines). This can help you to plan how much to take out each time and from which banks to tide you over until you open an Australian account.

Some banks in Australia such as Commonwealth Bank allow international students to open a bank account before they arrive. Commonwealth Bank lets you open a bank account up to 14 days before your arrival. You can easily open an Everyday Account online.

Apply for an Australian Tax File Number (TFN)

While not a ‘must have’, getting an Australian Tax File Number (TFN), will mean you don’t get taxed at a higher rate if you plan on working in Australia. It can take up to 28 days once you’ve submitted your application to get your TFN, so don’t delay once you arrive to apply. You can do so via the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website.

Sort your mobile phone

If you bring a mobile phone into Australia and it’s locked to your provider in your home country, you might need to buy a new phone here. You can sign up to a contract that allows you to pay off the handset in monthly instalments in addition to paying for calls, messages, and data.

You can bring an unlocked phone to Australia and then choose a SIM-only plan or pre-paid plan. Pre-paid SIM cards can be purchased from many supermarkets, mobile phone stores and airport sim card counters, and you can top up prepaid services online.

There’s a lot to consider when embarking on the exciting adventure of studying overseas. Work through each task to ensure that you’ve covered all the processes and requirements for a smooth journey to Australia and set up of your new life here in Sydney.
