Students looking to study an Academic English language course might be concerned about how an online learning experience compares to in-person classes. Can an online course offer the same level of interaction and engagement?

UNSW College’s Online University English Entry Course (OUEEC), delivered on the OpenLearning platform, is carefully designed to address these concerns. By using a range of best practice online learning approaches, this course has succeeded in creating an engaging and interactive environment that caters to every student’s needs.

Online learning tenets: Easy-to-follow, Teacher responsiveness, Progress monitoring, Self-direction, Feedback, Peer-to-peer interaction, Reflection, Online community

A supportive online learning community

From the minute students log in to Online UEEC, they feel immediately assured that they have joined a supportive online community to which they can belong. Teacher videos on the landing page warmly welcome students, and the first activity will ask them to introduce themselves to their teachers and new classmates, connecting them instantly, and reducing the distance of being in different cities or countries.

Active learning with supportive teachers

Our experienced online teachers offer dynamic and engaging lessons, making students feel as if they are in a physical classroom. The teachers carefully guide them through the course and assessments, helping them to not only improve their English proficiency but also develop active learning habits essential for participation in their undergraduate or post-graduate university courses. Each week, teachers share a summary to guide students to the unit ahead, making sure they understand their homework and upcoming assessments.

Social media look and feel

The OpenLearning platform offers a familiar social media-like experience where teachers and students can interact seamlessly. Students can find features for posting, liking, and commenting, making it easy to engage with lessons, share ideas, and upload content and assessments. Its user-friendly design makes contributing to the course both simple and intuitive.

Clear organisation of content and easy navigation

The course content is clearly organised, making it easy to find and download overviews, assessment details, and lesson materials. Attractive visual aids are given to help students grasp complex information.

A wide variety of online activities

Alongside various lesson types, students will also have weekly one-on-one consultation sessions for personalised support with their speaking and writing needs.

Students also have opportunities to work in groups to support each other with academic research and tasks.

Real-time lessons in Zoom

Our real-time lessons in Zoom provide an interactive learning experience with live discussions and group collaboration, closely mirroring in-person classes.

Teachers use digital tools such as interactive whiteboards and breakout rooms to personalise learning and deliver communicative lessons. Students also have access to videos, podcasts, and other multimedia resources, which they can review as often as needed.

Asynchronous activities with automated feedback

A variety of asynchronous activities are designed to support the Zoom lessons, providing a well-balanced 4-hour daily schedule.

These activities allow students to work independently, with self-checking options and instant automated feedback.

Reflection and feedback

Students will reflect on their own ideas, and their speaking and writing progress. They will also receive tailored teacher feedback and AI-generated insights to support their ongoing improvement. This self-assessment will help them build on their strengths, address weaknesses, and enhance their learning experience.

High success rates and preparation for UNSW

In 2020-2021, over 90% of students in the Online UEEC course achieved English proficiency equivalent to face-to-face pass rates. Teacher and student feedback shows that although it is online, this course builds confidence, English fluency, and independence, preparing students to succeed at UNSW and beyond.

How students feel about Online UEEC

Students who have completed this course often comment on how transformative it has been in preparing them for life at UNSW. For many, it exceeded their expectations of an online course, thanks to the exceptional teaching quality, dedicated support and carefully designed academic resources.
