More than one way to UNSW: Chantelle’s Diploma pathway to university

High school is just the beginning of an exciting educational journey, and your ATAR is only one part of your story. Even if your results aren’t exactly what you’d hoped for, there are plenty of pathways that can lead you to a top university and support you in building the career of your dreams.

That’s exactly what Chantelle discovered when she joined the Diploma of Business at UNSW College. Instead of giving up on her plans, she took a different path - one that provided the support, experience, and qualifications she needed to reach her goals.

A different path to UNSW Sydney

Like many students, Chantelle had a clear vision of what she wanted to do after high school.

“I always knew I wanted to study business,” she says. “There were lots of places I could go, but when I got my ATAR, it was lower than I expected.”

It was a moment of uncertainty. Many university courses have strict entry requirements, and missing the cut-off can feel like the end of the road. But then, Chantelle received an offer to study at UNSW College, a direct pathway to UNSW Sydney for students who didn’t quite meet the ATAR requirements for their chosen degree.

“At first, I had to think about it,” she admits. “But I quickly realised that it was actually a great opportunity—a stepping stone to the degree I really wanted.”

The Diploma of Business would allow Chantelle to study first-year university subjects in a smaller, more supportive environment and then progress straight into the second year of a Bachelor of Commerce at UNSW.

Support that made all the difference

One of the biggest surprises for Chantelle was how supported she felt at UNSW College.

“The lecturers and tutors really want you to succeed,” she says. “They help you get the marks you need and give you opportunities to ask questions, get feedback, and improve your skills.”

Unlike traditional university settings, where students can sometimes feel lost in large lecture halls, UNSW College offers smaller class sizes with more one-on-one support.

“Once a week, the tutors have set times where you can ask questions,” she explains. “I’ve been told that doesn’t happen very often at other places, so having that opportunity was really helpful.”

Chantelle describes the learning experience as independent but structured, with plenty of guidance available.

“It’s not like high school where everything is laid out for you, but it’s not overwhelming either. The teachers and tutors make sure you’re keeping up, and they’re really approachable if you need help.”

More than just a diploma – a confidence boost

Beyond academics, UNSW College helped Chantelle grow in confidence and develop skills that would be valuable in any career.

She highlights the collaborative learning environment as one of the most important aspects of her experience.

“In business, communication and teamwork are really important,” she says. “At UNSW College, I got to work with students from all over the world, and I learned how to communicate effectively with different people.”

One of her favourite subjects was Collaboration and Innovation, which was designed specifically for business students.

“It was all about teamwork—how to work with different personalities, how to be a leader, and how to approach challenges,” she explains. “Some of the tutors really stood out to me because they made learning fun and engaging. It encouraged me to feel more comfortable and confident in class.”

These experiences gave Chantelle a new perspective on her abilities.

“I always thought I was more of an introvert, but through group projects, I realised I actually have leadership skills,” she says. “It was cool to learn that I can delegate tasks and support a team—skills I know will help me in my career.”

University life - without the overwhelm

For many students, transitioning from high school to university can be a challenge. Large lectures, fast-paced coursework, and independent learning can feel overwhelming. But Chantelle found that UNSW College made the shift easier.

“The class sizes are smaller—about 15 to 20 students—so it’s easier to make friends and connect with your teachers,” she says.

She also found that the smaller community at UNSW College made her feel comfortable from the start.

“I was nervous at first, especially on orientation day,” she recalls. “But someone came up to me and introduced themselves, and suddenly everything felt easier. It was just a really welcoming environment.”

The social side of college life was also a highlight for Chantelle.

“I went to a trivia night and met some great friends. We stayed in touch, and having those connections made class even more enjoyable,” she says.

Looking to the future

After successfully completing her Diploma of Business, Chantelle is now on track to start her Bachelor of Commerce at UNSW Sydney—without losing time or repeating any study.

“All the diploma subjects count as first-year university credits, so I go straight into second year,” she explains. “That was a big factor in my decision to come to UNSW College. I didn’t want to add extra time to my degree.”

She now feels fully prepared for university life, with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed.

“I’ve learned so much—not just about business, but about teamwork, communication, and how to manage my time effectively,” she says. “UNSW College helped me grow as a student and as a person.”

There’s no one-size-fits-all pathway

For students who didn’t get the ATAR they wanted, Chantelle has one message: don’t give up.

“University isn’t a one-size-fits-all experience,” she says. “There are so many different pathways to get to where you want to be.”

For her, UNSW College wasn’t just an alternative—it was an important foundation for success.

“I felt confident in my choice to study at UNSW College because it gave me a second chance,” she says. “I appreciated the support, the opportunities, and the experience. It was a stepping stone, not a setback.”

Her advice to other students?

“Look at all your options. There’s no ‘right’ way to get to university—only the way that works best for you. And for me, UNSW College was the perfect fit.”
