Why a pathway program could be your best move

Starting university is a big deal. It’s exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Picture this—you’ve just finished high school, and now you’re stepping into a huge lecture hall with hundreds of students, trying to keep up with fast-paced coursework and an entirely new way of learning. For some, that’s thrilling. For others, it can be a tough adjustment.

What if there was another way? A smoother, more supportive transition into university life — one where you build confidence, get to know your teachers, and still end up in second year at UNSW Sydney? That’s exactly what a pathway program offers.

At UNSW College, our Diplomas are designed for students who just missed direct entry into UNSW Sydney. In just 12 months, you’ll study the same first-year subjects as a UNSW degree student, but with smaller classes, extra academic support, and a clear path into second year at UNSW.

More than just a pathway — a stronger start

A Diploma with UNSW College isn’t just a backup plan — it’s a way to start uni with confidence. Instead of being locked into a specialisation too soon, you’ll get a broad foundation across your field, helping you explore different areas before deciding on your focus.

Depending on your Diploma, you’ll experience a mix of subjects across key areas:

  • Architecture & Design – Explore architecture, interior architecture, and landscape architecture for a well-rounded view of the built environment.

  • Business & Commerce – Dive into business analytics, financial management, marketing, and global business environments.

  • Engineering – Gain a foundation in mathematics, physics, and engineering design while exploring areas like civil, electrical, mechanical, and renewable energy engineering.

  • Science & Health – Gain a solid STEM foundation in biology, chemistry, physics, and applied sciences.

  • Media & Communications – Develop expertise in journalism, digital media, public relations, advertising, and screen & sound production.

This broad learning approach gives you room to discover what excites you while preparing you for second year with a clearer direction. You’ll also be on campus from day one, using UNSW’s world-class facilities and becoming part of the university community. But unlike jumping straight into a full degree, you’ll have smaller classes, more teaching time, and teachers who actually take the time to guide you. Plus, you’ll be surrounded by a tight-knit student community, making it easier to find your people and settle into uni life.

Pathway students succeed—and the stats back it up

Over 90% of UNSW College graduates progress to UNSW Sydney and continue their studies alongside direct-entry students. With up to 20% more teaching time, pathway students often feel more confident and better prepared for university.

Where can a pathway program take you?

A pathway program isn’t just about getting into uni — it’s about giving you the flexibility and preparation to take your degree further. Once you complete your studies at UNSW, you’ll have access to internships, industry connections, and global opportunities to help you stand out in the job market.

Your pathway can open doors for careers like:

  • Architecture & Design – Architect, interior designer, landscape architect
